Just a quick reminder: What with all the emphasis on Positive, you may not have noticed it but Nice Cuts is now back in stock for holiday ordering.

Apologia: Running Order/Positive 2010

I’m wondering today when the Latin/Greek apologia As I survey the rack and ruin of yesterday’s election, I am struck by many speeches trying to toe the line between both forms of ‘apology’. How to say ‘I accept responsibility’ while at the same time defending the path one has chosen. Today’s ‘apology’, in the classic sense, has to do with the running order of Positive 2010. It differs from the original. Which is a sell-out; a total artistic cave, and here’s why I done it, Ma. It was for the good of the country. Or rather for the good of [...]

Getting People To Dance: The New Download Scheme

Been doing a lot of dance gigs recently—building the ol’ chops to play live again. And I’ve been wondering about why people dance to some songs and not others. There are lots of songs that we’ll play that are just slammin’ but the dancers? Ho humsville. Then other songs, that everyone in the band feels totally ambivalent about? The dancers lose their minds. There is a middle-aged stampede to hump the stuffed tiger. (Don’t ask.) Now you could say that the above situation is because ‘the band’ likes songs that are more musically interesting than the dancers, but this is [...]

JCHMusic Now On TheSixtyOne

Add thesixtyone.com to the never-ending list of places you can check out JCHMusic. This site is a great place to see really new bands, with a heavy emphasis on ‘indie’, but every once in a while there are some out of the mainstream acts (such as moi.) Thesixtyone has all the usual ‘social networking’ bells and whistles. You can ‘like’ and ‘share’ and create ‘playlists’ but it’s real strength is in exposing you to new, quality artists that you might not otherwise encounter (the true beauty of a good radio station is the encounter with the unexpected, n’est pas?) OK, [...]

Cloud Cuckoo Land

…with apologies to Aristophanes. As I previously stated, I’m pretty sure that piracy will soon be a thing of the past. And that’s because the concept of ‘ownership’ will soon be a thing of the past. People will no longer need to steal music because they will get it all from ‘the cloud’. They will give up ownership in order to pay for convenience. The question for me is how will artists get paid when this happens, because it sure as shit ain’t part of the business model now. There is also this whole fantasy world which is finally being [...]

JCHMusic: The Radio Station

I must admit that my motives are not entirely altruistic. (I’m shocked. Shocked.) Apparently the clever French Persons behind this deal are planning all sorts of insinuations into various social networking platforms so that when you click on a radio station all your friends can be compelled (well, asked nicely) to join along. In short, their hope is that this is just another lure to get people to click, Click, CLICK and get ad revenue somehow either from direct purchases or gleaning marketing data. So I am a collaborator in their Fifth Column plans. Why am I not so troubled [...]

I Gotsta Get Me Some FBFs ASAP

…You know what I mean? This is an update on my paltry marketing efforts. Click Throughs 1. The adverts have changed a bit as you may have noticed. I am continuing to expend a certain amount of energy generating various ‘click-throughs’ to get a penny or two whenever y’all go to and fro over the vast InterWeb using my site links as your gateway. One way to think of these is like those product placements one sees now in every TV show and movie. But unlike those, it is very important to me that these be innocuous. The best response [...]

The Successful Indie Artist Myth

“Submitted for your approval…” Jaron Lanier Speaks To Canadian Music Week Anyone remember Rod Serling? He hosted a little show called ‘The Twilight Zone’ which started every bizzare-o episode with the above. I use it because I’ve been trying to tell people since I got started doing my little sideshow that the world the ‘Internet-Empowered’ world they think that they live in is as surreal as anything Rod ever cooked up. In fact, ‘surreal’ isn’t really the word for it because far from being merely an entertaining alternate reality — like believing in Santy and the North Pole, this illusion [...]
